It can be a shock ...
to realize that many people don’t know the difference between right and wrong. I’m not just talking about children. How else to explain the drug culture, including those who smoke ‘legal’ artificial highs; the huge and growing disparity between the rich and the poor; ‘road rage’ and violence against women and children? The reality is that many don’t know that it is wrong to use violence to get your own way; it is wrong to be greedy and have no regard for the poor; it is wrong to intoxicate yourself with no thought for the consequences. People don’t know it is wrong because no one has told them; for many that’s just the way life is. When Jesus entered Jerusalem on a colt, people waved palm branches and cried out “Hosanna to the son of David!” as they welcomed their king. When he arrived he drove out the money-changers from the Temple forecourt. Jesus knew right from wrong. He knew these people were extorting money from the poor. His purpose was to not only challenge the stall-holders, but the whole system that misused power and wealth to oppress and exploit. Jesus’ gospel continues to challenge and disturb. We still need to hear his voice and follow his example. “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” Alex Czerwonka
