St Luke's day

Vicar’s Reflection: 12th October 2014, St Luke’s Day

In 2 Timothy 4 when St Paul was in prison in Rome and expecting to be executed at any time he sent final greetings to friends and companions and notes “Luke only is with me.” For Jocelyn and me it was a special privilege earlier this year to be in Rome and to stand in the very rooms where these words were written.  We know these things because in addition to Luke’s great courage and loyalty he was a great writer. His Gospel is marked by obvious compassion for those who are ill, disabled, excluded and oppressed. There are many stories unique to Luke’s Gospel: the Annunciation and the visit of the shepherds and angels; the songs of Zechariah, the Magnificat and the Nunc Dimitis; the parables of the Good Samaritan, the Prodigal Son, and much more. He has truly enriched our knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ through his writings. We honour Luke today. We also honour Joy Cowley, our guest at our 10am service, who has written so many books and received so many awards she probably has no room on her shelves. Thank you Joy for being with us today and for your writing which has especially enriched the reading experience of children. I am sure Luke would approve.  May God bless us all this St Luke’s Day.                                                                  Alex Czerwonka
