2nd December 2018 Advent 1
Vicar’s Reflection: 2nd December 2018, Advent 1
The adventure of Christmas preparation begins again. And just like other years I feel unprepared. I could do with a couple of extra weeks in Advent, but alas, there are only these four. Four weeks beginning today to get ready to celebrate the greatest of all events in God’s dealings with humanity. The arrival of Jesus to a specific place, culture, time and family has in a sense hallowed all places, cultures, times and families. If God can be present in one baby and Holy Family, them God can be present in all. This is the mystery of the incarnation. Therefore, we approach Christmas with an inner sense of hush, even if the world around us is going crazy with the spend! spend! spend! mantra of popular culture. We offer some special opportunities for experiencing the reverence, hush and awe with which Christmas preparation should touch us. Tonight at 7pm we hold an Advent Carol service, with special music prepared by the Choir and Music Group and with readings that tell the unfolding story. We will also offer 9 Lessons & Carols on Sunday 16 December also at 7pm. I love these more reflective services and I always appreciate the hours of preparation by those involved. Thank you in advance. May your preparations include some time out to draw close to God in reverence and awe. And may your family be a holy place for you this Advent and Christmas.
