Ordinary 19 11 August 2019

Vicar’s Reflection: Ordinary Sunday 19, 11 August 2019. Ready for the Unexpected

Jesus often taught using paradox. Simply put a paradox is a seemingly absurd or contradictory statement or proposition which when investigated may prove to be well founded or true. There are two paradoxes in the gospel reading today. In the first Jesus proposes we dispose of all our possessions to find true treasure. And in the second he advises us to be well prepared for the unexpected, yet an unexpected event is, by definition, something for which you cannot really prepare. What is he getting at? I think he is getting at our attitude for living. What are the heart-felt attitudes that drive and motivate us in life? Where is our true treasure? Our true treasure is to be found in the things to which we give our time, energy and resources. We have farewelled in funeral services this week two of our older parishioners Jane Collins and Pam Edwards. Each service in different ways paid tribute to the loving and giving natures of these two lovely ladies. Their treasure was displayed in the fond tributes given and the clear evidence of family friends, neighbours and colleagues of how they served graciously, gave generously of themselves and shared many happy memories. This is the kind of treasure that is stored in heaven. There are many predictable events in life and many that are unpredictable. We can prepare ourselves for both by cultivating the attitudes of our heart with an openness to others and willingness to see God in all.
